I'm using the demo version to evaluate converting a 720x480 SD series of clips to HD.  When choosing the output size (properties) the dvhd radio button is grayed out and I am only given the option to save in SD dimensions.

Can anyone help me figure out what might be going on?

I'm not sure but perhaps there is a DirectShow problem. Do you see the preview of your video in the window and can you navigate throughout ? You should try to open your video via an avisynth script, see here: http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=33
