I've made a comparison of the best upscaling methods available today and there are TWO winners: VideoEnhancer and EEDI2. As a matter of fact, VideoEnhancer COULD be the absolute winner if it used EEDI2 as a fallback instead of Lanczos (it seems it's Lanczos used there). Of couse, EEDI2 is slow as hell but for a "superb" quality setting it would be great. See for yourself (left is EEDI2 with Lanczos4 fallback, right is VideoEnhancer 1.9.1):
EEDI2 is superb in upscaling smooth lines, especially those with thin edges, note the jagginess on the edge of the sink and on the Mattias' hair in the last frame and fine details in the reflections on the floor in the second frame.

Thanks! That's a reasonable suggestion, although last time I looked at EEDI2 it produced some unwanted artifacts.. Probably some future versions of Video Enhancer will use EEDI2 too.

I'm guessing when you say fallback its referring to the resizing algorithm used, And if i remember correctly Video enhancer uses Lanczos3, why cant video enhancer use lanczos4? isn't lanczos4 superior in quality?

Actually Lanczos3 was used in earlier versions of VE as part of super resolution algorithm. Lanczos4 didn't give much advantage but was slower.
Since version 1.9.3 VE uses different upscaling method, not Lanczos.
