Hi,

I'm not really an expert at using the super resolution filter of video enhancer but I am trying to see if the file below can be enhanced by super resolution filter of video enhancer noticeably.

http://www.mediafire.com/?66zhf41gclvudo2

Is it possible to only upscale to 720x480 and see a noticeable difference in quality? Basically, I am trying to make a dvd and this is a small video clip of that. I noticed that when playing it in full screen in powerdvd the quality was not as good as when playing in regular size. I would like to be able to play it at full screen and still retain the quality as when I play it at 720x480. Is this at all possible? Thanks for any help.

the video needs more then super resolution can provide.
there is deinterlacing needed.
all the filters can be founded on the video enhancer page under virtualdub filters.
but to simply answer your question, video enhancer can make the video noticeably better but only to an extent. If you want to scale this to full-screen and still have it look good then you might as well get the original HD version because I doubt any current software can achieve that level of improvement.
just play around with video enhancer and see what you can get.
I guess I wasn't much help sorry.

I will try the deinterlacing thanks. I got this clip from a nintendo wii which is hooked up via composite video to a vcr which is hooked up composite video to an ATi TV Wonder Pro Pci tv tuner/video capture card. I use wm encoder 9 at vbr 100. Can the clip be improved with super resolution/scaled to full screen and then be resized to 720x480 and retain quality full screen/regular size?

scaled to fullscreen? what resolution would "fullscreen" be 1920x1080? If you have a weak system this will take quite a long time to process (a whole movie that is). I have upscaled to fullscreen and then back down to a lower resolution before, and I find its a waste of time as the results look the same. I would just recommend you scale to 720x480 and thats it, saves time and heat. also throw in some deinterlacing filters to handle the interlacing. speaking of wii games, cant you just find a method of extracting the video straight from the disc? im pretty sure there is a way, that would give a better if not best source to work with.

The sample is of somebody driving a green sports car, right?

In that case, this video DO NOT need to be deinterlaced.

The capture process has considerably decreased it's quality.

May I ask you if this is captured from a DVD or a game?

If it's from a DVD, there are other ways which are much better than capturing the way you did.

Full screen would be like playing in wmp 12 and choosing full screen playback, which my monitor is 1280x1024. I'm actually capturing from netflix-nintendo wii.

Yes a green sports car. It is from netflix-nintendo wii-streaming video.

Hmm, from the post it states that he is using a WII, and the capture resolution is 640x480 meaning its either 480I or 480P, considering the capture card is connected using composite its more than likely 480I, meaning interlaced. From that information I came to a quick conclusion that he needed some de-interlacing. On a closer inspection it seems the video is already de-interlaced (not sure) using a very low quality method (blurring of both fields together, or motion blur) that is why when you play the video frame per frame you see somewhat of an after image. I'm guessing your capture card is the culprit (not sure). There is jagged edges left from the poor quality of the capture and an Antialiasing filter might just fix that. There isn't much I can tell you to make the video look better.
If you ask me though video enhancer isn't quite needed in this situation as the increase in resolution isn't that great, a simple resizing method like lanczos3 or lanczos4 will do just fine. If video enhancer is still your method of choice then I would recommend up-scaling it closer to 2x the original resolution, that's where video enhancer shines.

Here is some samples of the video clip you provided....

This one is a simulated full screen view of the original source in 1280x1024 using windows media player:

This one is a simulated full screen view of video enhancer to 960x540 in 1280x1024 in windows media player:

To compare 640x480 to 960x540 simulations click on the link http://manoman455.webs.com/Help/compare.html

As you can see there is barely any difference, look at the rims its is the most noticeable, its slightly sharper with video enhancer but that's about it.

What really is missing is sharpness @ playback this can be easily achieved even with a simple pixel shader applied in realtime Smiley
The culprit here its absolutely over quantized going thru several lossy compression steps, and there is left anti aliasing everwhere from the deinterlacing you see that allready @ the beginning of the camera pan down its ugly as hell.
Though once you got rid of that over quantization you gonna see the next problem analog noise from the capture process, and not to forget the blocking of WMV2 in between all that and its quantization noise Tongue
Also obviously the original was film so the whole frame rate reconversion after the already hard cleanup process comes @ ya.
Pushing this into Video Enhancer and think something marvelous comes out @ the end it's not as easy
The Motion Blur seems original it should be left in else @ the original film frame rate you would get a surprise.

Film->Digital Master->Netflix H.264->Analog Capture->WMV2 is my guess where it all starts Smiley

well If its Sharpening you want then this is what I came up with...
Original Image simulated to 1280x1024:

Here is the 960x540 simulated to 1280x1024 with video filters:

And to see a comparison click here: http://manoman455.webs.com/Help/compare2.html

It is definitely much sharper but looks kinda off I think.
There is many things to do with this video but I don't think any of it will prove to be sufficient.

Ehh please stay to the original that's a Movie no moving oil painting, as i said you don't need needi to make that look ok it can be much faster and easier achieved Wink

Well, I have a tactic of uprezing with 2 SR's and then back down to the rez you request. And between I normally use Deblocking and Denoising and filters of the sort. I'l check out this file and see what I can do to it. Although a movie.... would take days of processing in my strategy. But I'l show you what I can do with just this clip.

I don't know if you were referring to my post or not but I didn't use nnedi or any other form of it (eedi, 2 or 3). All I did was added sharpening, smoothing, de-noising filters.
very quick and easy, and for the oil paint look, I already said it was "off".

Good to see some people genuinely helping instead of just posting to just post, Arkamond your of great help.

OK time for a rant on CruNcher

pixel shader?Huh? WTF!!!! what version 1? 1.1? 1.2? 2 maybe? or possibly 5? last I checked pixel shader is for 3D rendering like direct3d and opengl.
left anti-aliasing?Huh? you mean aliasing?
get rid of ALL quantization?Huh? I'd like to know how!!!!
No ordinary person has the original FILM......so whats your point? we all have to work with what they give us....cd/dcd/bluray/etc or in this case a capture (which all have the "clean up").
surprise? what are you talking about?

Look I know I'm not a mod or admin and I'm not trying to troll on the forums but this person is looking for help, and this whole thing you posted makes it sound like the task is almost impossible and they should just give up, it sounds discouraging.

If this was offensive I'm Sorry.
Mention so and I will edit or remove this post.

Back on topic:
I also have a more task heavy method of enhancing this video, I only posted the easier/faster method because I don't know what system you are using or how powerful it is.
Will post results later....
