Trying different things last night with the DV compression I noticed that the program is very touchy regarding enhancement - eg. Noise removal with sharpen edges in particular - produces large black areas - kinda sci-fi psychedelic-esque.

I recall such effect with early versions of MSU Smart Deblocking filter. Current version doesn't have this bug, so be sure you're not using the old one. Fixed version is part of the filter pack:
